// Let us not reduce our living in all of its dimensions to our end point.
//All of our lives will end, one way or another.// (我們每個人的生命,終究都會以某種方式畫下句點。)

// Let us not reduce our living in all of its dimensions to our end point. //
Rest in peace.
Irvin Yalom has always been a towering figure in existential psychotherapy. But recently, a quiet tremor went through the professional community: his son, Victor Yalom—a brilliant therapist in his own right—passed away by suicide.
In the wake of this painful loss, Victor’s brother, Ben Yalom, wrote a deeply moving tribute that shook me to my core. Reading his words, I was reminded of a fragile truth we so often forget: counseling and therapy are never panaceas.
We must never fall into the illusion that by studying theories or mastering techniques, we can somehow solve the mystery of the human soul, or shield ourselves and those we love from pain forever.
At our core, we are all just human. No matter how wise, compassionate, or accomplished a therapist is, they are still bound by the same fragile, beautiful flesh and blood as everyone else.
Just as the most brilliant physician is not immune to illness, physical decay, or the quiet limitations of aging, a healer of the mind is not immune to the darkness. To acknowledge this is not to diminish the worth of our profession; rather, it is to bow our heads in profound reverence to the sheer complexity of life.
// All of our lives will end, one way or another. //
Perhaps, precisely because life is fleeting and fragile, the true beauty of our work lies elsewhere. It is in the quiet privilege of walking alongside another human soul—whether a client or a peer—as we explore the landscape of existence together.
It is in standing at the crossroads of our lives, honestly facing our limits, and holding onto the beauty of the present moment. That shared, raw presence is the most authentic gift therapy can ever offer.
